Dermal fillers are injectable gels that restore lost volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. Unlike neurotoxins which relax muscles, fillers physically add structure and volume to the treated area. At Afterglow, we use premium hyaluronic acid-based fillers from the Juvederm line, carefully selected and placed for natural, harmonious results.

Filler is an art form. Our providers approach every treatment with a full-face perspective — understanding how each area interacts with the others — to ensure results that look balanced and intentional, never overdone.

WHAT IT TREATS

What Can Fillers Treat?

  • Lips — volume, definition, and symmetryFDA-approved
  • Cheeks — restore lifted, youthful contourFDA-approved
  • Under-eyes (tear troughs) — reduce hollowing and dark circles
  • Nasolabial folds — soften smile linesFDA-approved
  • Jawline — add definition and structure
  • Chin — improve projection and balanceFDA-approved
  • Temples — restore volume lost with age
  • Hands — reduce visible veins and tendonsFDA-approved

FDA-approved marks the uses on the FDA’s list for dermal fillers in adults 22 and older: lips, cheeks, chin, the back of the hand, and wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds. Approval is per product, so ask your provider which filler they’ll use and what it’s approved for.

Types of Filler We Use

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers

Juvederm Line HA fillers are our go-to for most treatments. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the body, making these fillers safe, effective, and reversible. The Juvederm line includes products formulated for specific areas — from ultra-fine options for delicate areas like lips and tear troughs to thicker products for cheeks and jawline structure.

Sculptra — Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)

For patients seeking gradual, long-lasting collagen stimulation rather than immediate volume, Sculptra is an exceptional option. See the dedicated Sculptra page for full details.

What to Expect

During Treatment

Most filler appointments take 30–60 minutes. A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand for comfort. Most Juvederm fillers also contain lidocaine, making the injection itself more comfortable.

After Treatment

Mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness are normal and typically resolve within 3–7 days. Lips tend to swell the most — final results are best assessed at 2 weeks. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and blood thinners for 24 hours post-treatment.

How Long Do Results Last?

Results vary by product and area lips typically last 6–12 months, cheeks and jawline 12–18 months. Touch-ups maintain and build on results over time.

have a question?

Quick answers to questions you may have

Is filler reversible?
Yes — hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed. This is one of the key safety advantages of HA fillers over permanent options.
How do I know how much I need?
Your provider will assess your anatomy and goals during consultation and recommend a starting point. We always recommend starting conservatively and adding at a follow-up rather than over-treating in one session.

SAFETY

Safety information

Read this before your treatment, and tell your provider about any condition or medicine it mentions.

Get medical help right away for skin that turns white, gray or blue, or severe pain near the injection site, or any change in your vision, during or after treatment.

Who should not have it

  • Anyone under 22: FDA approval of dermal fillers is for adults 22 and older.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: the FDA says safety in either is unknown.
  • People prone to keloids or thick, raised scars: safety is unknown.
  • Anyone allergic to the filler's ingredients. Fillers made from animal-derived materials call for allergy testing first.

Common side effects

  • Bruising, redness, swelling, pain and tenderness at the injection sites.
  • Itching or a rash.

Serious risks

  • Injection into a blood vessel by accident, blocking blood flow. The chance is low, but the complications can be serious and permanent: tissue death, vision problems including blindness, and stroke.
  • Lumps under the skin (nodules or granulomas) that may need injections, antibiotics or surgical removal.
  • Infection, open or draining wounds, and allergic reactions.
  • Swelling or redness near the filler that can flare after an illness, a vaccination or dental work.

FDA approval and off-label use

Use a filler only for FDA-approved areas and products. The FDA advises against unapproved uses, needle-free filler devices, and fillers bought online.
