Who should not have it

  • People with kidney disease: kidney failure has been reported after IV vitamin C in people with a history of kidney disease.
  • People prone to kidney stones: the NCI says they should not be treated with IV vitamin C.
  • People with G6PD deficiency, an inherited condition: high doses of vitamin C may destroy red blood cells (hemolysis).
  • People with hemochromatosis (iron overload): high doses of vitamin C are not recommended.
  • For NAD+: pregnancy or breastfeeding. NAD+ has not been studied in either.
  • For NAD+: kidney disease, liver disease or active cancer. Safety information in these conditions is very limited, so tell your provider first.
  • For NAD+: tell your provider about every medicine you take. How NAD+ interacts with other medicines has not been well studied.

Common side effects

  • For NAD+ by IV: flushing, nausea, belly discomfort or cramping, and chest pressure, more likely when the drip runs faster.

Serious risks

  • Kidney failure in people with a history of kidney disease.
  • Hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) with high doses in G6PD deficiency.
