Neurotoxins are injectable treatments that temporarily relax the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles — the lines that form from repeated expressions like squinting, frowning, or smiling. At Afterglow, we offer three FDA-approved neurotoxins: Botox, Jeuveau, and Dysport. All three work through the same mechanism, but each has subtle differences in onset, spread, and duration that …

WHAT IT TREATS

What Can Neurotoxins Treat?

  • Forehead linesFDA-approved
  • Frown lines (the ’11s’ between the brows)FDA-approved
  • Crow’s feet around the eyesFDA-approved
  • Bunny lines on the nose
  • Lip lines and lip flip
  • Chin dimpling
  • Jaw slimming and TMJ relief
  • Neck bands (platysmal bands)FDA-approved
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)FDA-approved: underarms
  • Brow lifting

FDA-approved marks a use the FDA has approved: BOTOX Cosmetic for frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines and neck bands (Jeuveau and Dysport for frown lines), and BOTOX for severe underarm sweating. The other areas are common practice but off-label.

Botox vs. Jeuveau vs. Dysport

Botox

The original and most well-known neurotoxin. FDA-approved since 2002, Botox has the longest track record and broadest range of approved indications. Results typically appear within 5–7 days and last 3–4 months.

Jeuveau

A newer neurotoxin sometimes called ‘Newtox,’ Jeuveau is made using a modern manufacturing process and is FDA-approved specifically for cosmetic use. Many patients find it kicks in slightly faster than Botox. Results last 3–4 months.

Dysport

Dysport has a slightly different formulation that causes it to spread more than Botox — which makes it particularly effective for larger treatment areas like the forehead. It often has a faster onset (2–5 days) and may last slightly longer for some patients.

What to Expect

During Treatment

Injections take 15–30 minutes. A fine needle is used and most patients experience minimal discomfort. No numbing is typically required.

After Treatment

You may notice small bumps or mild redness at injection sites — these resolve within 30–60 minutes. Results appear gradually over 5–14 days. Avoid lying flat, exercising intensely, or rubbing the treated area for 4 hours post-treatment.

How Long Do Results Last?

Most patients enjoy results for 3–4 months. With consistent treatment over time, many find they need less product and treatments less frequently.

have a question?

Quick answers to questions you may have

Will I look frozen or unnatural?
Not with us. Our approach is always natural-first. We assess your muscle movement, facial anatomy, and goals before treatment and dose conservatively. You can always add more at a follow-up — you can’t take it back.
Which neurotoxin is right for me?
Your provider will recommend the best option based on your treatment area, anatomy, and past experience with neurotoxins. If you’ve tried one and weren’t happy with the results, there may be a better fit.
Can I combine neurotoxins with filler?
Yes — and it’s one of the most effective combinations in aesthetics. Neurotoxins address dynamic wrinkles while fillers restore volume. Many patients do both in a single appointment.

SAFETY

Safety information

Read this before your treatment, and tell your provider about any condition or medicine it mentions.

Get medical help right away if you have trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing after treatment, or new muscle weakness.

Who should not have it

  • Anyone allergic to any botulinum toxin product or to an ingredient in the formulation. Dysport may contain trace amounts of cow's milk protein, so it is not for anyone allergic to it.
  • Anyone with an infection where the injections would go.
  • People with a neuromuscular disorder such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome or ALS, or with swallowing or breathing difficulties. The labels call for extra caution and monitoring, so tell your provider first.
  • People with heart disease: the labels report cardiovascular events after botulinum toxins, some fatal, and advise caution.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: there are no adequate studies in pregnant women. Tell your provider if either applies.

Common side effects

  • Headache: 9% of patients treated for forehead lines with BOTOX Cosmetic in trials, and 12% of patients treated for frown lines with Jeuveau.
  • Drooping eyelid or brow: eyelid drooping in 2–3% of patients treated for frown lines; brow drooping in 2% treated for forehead lines.
  • Swelling around the eyes after treatment of crow's feet (about 1%).
  • Pain or a reaction at the injection site.
  • Dry eye after injection near the eye.

Serious risks

  • Spread of toxin effect, an FDA boxed warning: the effect can spread beyond the injection site, causing generalized weakness, double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, and trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing. It can appear hours to weeks after injection. Swallowing and breathing difficulties can be life-threatening.
  • Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, hives, swelling and difficulty breathing.

FDA approval and off-label use

BOTOX Cosmetic is FDA-approved for frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines and neck bands; Jeuveau and Dysport for frown lines only, and Dysport’s approval is for adults under 65. BOTOX (the same drug, a different label) is approved for severe underarm sweating that topical treatments haven’t controlled. Using any of them anywhere else is off-label. Units of the three are not interchangeable: each product is dosed on its own scale.
